Review of the KJV Study Bible in Black Genuine Cowhide from Holman

DSCN0976

What we have here is a King James Version study Bible from Holman covered in genuine cowhide black leather.

DSCN1027

The leather is soft and flexible with a nice grain to it.  The entire Bible flexes and bends very easily without being too floppy.

DSCN1026 DSCN1025 DSCN1024

The inside cover is lined.

DSCN0983

It has a sewn binding which enables it to lie flat when opened fresh out of the box without requiring to be broken in.  It will also last much longer with this kind of binding making this Bible an excellent long term Study Bible.

DSCN1023

It comes with two ribbon markers.  One is black the other is silver.  The ribbons are good quality, not those flimsy thin things you find in cheaper Bibles.

DSCN1022 DSCN1021

The utilization of full color features is eye catching and will invite the reader to explore many side studies, however due to the full color features the pages do stick together right out of the box and require some working in.  Be careful not to tear any pages while you are separating them.  Included are a one and three year reading plan to keep you on track.

DSCN1016 DSCN1015 DSCN1014 DSCN1013 DSCN0996 DSCN0990

The books have introductions, time-lines, and outlines.

DSCN1008 DSCN1009 DSCN1010

The headings, chapter and verse numbers are in blue.

DSCN1011

The words of Christ are in red.  The print is in a two column format with references in the center column. The font is crisp black 9 point font, with high contrast against the white paper behind it.

DSCN1017 DSCN1019 DSCN1011

The page edges and spine are gild in silver.

DSCN0979 DSCN0978 DSCN0977

This a well crafted Bible made here in America, that will give you many years of service backed up by a lifetime warranty.

If you are in the market for a study Bible you have many options these days.  You can opt for a signature one like a, “Macarthur Study Bible” or you can choose one with numerous contributors like the, “ESV Study Bible.”  Why would you choose the Holman KJV Study Bible?  I know my KJV only friends won’t want this Bible because it lacks the Authorized Version stamp of approval because it has a copyright.  I know my hipster friends won’t want it because it isn’t gender inclusive enough for them.  I know my peers won’t buy it because, “The KJV is too hard to understand…”  To all of them I say, “You don’t know what you are missing.”  Listen I love the NASB, KJV, ESV, NKJV, and HCSB translations.

I’m not so misinformed or deceived that I’ll write off a Bible translation just because of some laymen’s haphazard critique.  I read and study for myself and accept Biblical counsel from men who are more learned and mature.  Over the years I’ve come to appreciate the history behind translations like the KJV and the Geneva Bible.  This particular Bible has so many articles, notes, maps, pictures, and helps that it would be ridiculous to write it off just because it is KJV.  Matter of fact most people that have a problem with KJV have not even really tried to read one.

I think after you look at some of the pictures, and realize how well constructed this Bible is and see many of the wonderful features it includes it might generate some new interest in this venerable old version.

Here are a list of features that I might have left out;

Full-color page designs
Full-color maps, charts, and reconstructions
Extensive book introductions and commentary notes
40-page concordance
Essays on practical and theological issues
Feature-length articles on the origin and transmission of the Bible
41 photos
62 timelines
59 maps
20 articles and essays
16 illustrations and reconstructions
15 charts
A helpful glossary of 17th century expressions relative to the KJV’s signature phrasing
Self-pronouncing text
Two-column text setting
Center-column cross references
The words of Jesus in red
One- and three-year Bible reading plans
Presentation page
Family Registry
Two ribbon markers
Silver page edges

Review of the Holman NKJV Ultrathin Reference Bible in Brown Genuine Cowhide.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 002

***Update 09/12/14***  I heard back from the publisher and they confirmed that this particular print of this Bible was not a sewn binding however the ones made after it in the same year do have a sewn binding.

*** Update 08/21/13***  Ok, I have to add some info here.  You can still read my original review below, but as I’ve been using this Bible I have been able to see some things I originally missed.  The first thing is that the paper is much better than I expressed in my original post below.  It is pretty smooth in texture and the ink is sharply printed on it offering good contrast and limited ghosting.  The second thing is that the cover is much softer leather than perhaps I explained.  If it wasn’t on card paper and lined inside with vinyl it would be floppy.  It is also pretty thick leather.  I doubt it will be easily hurt.  Last, I’d like to note that Holman as of yet has not responded to my questions about the binding.  I can observe that the maps in the back and the presentation pages in the front are sewn into the Bible, but that doesn’t mean the Bible itself has a sewn binding.  I still can’t see any dimples on the inside that would indicate stitching and the binding doesn’t bend like a sewn binding.  I’m going to wait a bit longer before I damage the Bible to find out if it is in fact sewn.  I really hope it is sewn.  Even if it isn’t, this is a great Bible.  I love the size and weight.  It is a good all around thinline reference Bible.  If it turns out to be a sewn binding, I would compare it to the $35 Lockman Foundation NASB.

The Holman Ultrathin NKJV Reference Bible almost got it perfect.  My only gripe is that it is a glued binding.  The advertisement on Christianbook.com says it is a sewn binding http://www.christianbook.com/nkjv-ultrathin-reference-brown-genuine-cowhide/9781433615030/pd/615030?event=ESRCG  and reviews on other sites have also said it is a sewn binding, but I don’t believe it is.  I took a close look at it and it looks and lays like a glued binding.  Here is what a sewn binding looks like when it is opened up

NASB Reference Bible Genuine Calfskin Black 054

Notice how it bends where it is opened.  The pages don’t have to bend from a central glued point in a sewn binding.  This is what the Holman looked like.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 040

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 041

I would hate to have to cut such a nice Bible up to see if it is truly sewn or not so I think I will first e-mail Holman and ask them.  If they say it is sewn, I’ll probably have to cut this Bible up to see.  They might be paying for it to be sewn in Korea, but who knows if it is getting done.  Perhaps there is a mix up over at Christianbook.com?

Having that said let’s take a look at what makes it a good buy.  First off, I like the New King James Version (NKJV)  it is a good translation.  It is easy to read and it is accurate.  It has been around for quite a while now and I am pretty familiar with it.  My favorite is the NASB, but the NKJV comes in fourth for me.  NASB, ESV, KJV, and NKJV.  I don’t think I’d bother with any other translations.  Too many agenda driven ones out there now.

The Bible came in a cardboard box, cushioned with paper.  The Bible was inside a retail box that would be good to store the Bible in as it is pretty sturdy.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 001

The Bible itself was wrapped inside two sleeves of thick, brown, paper.  This was to protect the cowhide cover.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 004

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 005

I liked the cover.  It was genuine cowhide and pretty thick.  It was somewhat tacky in texture making it easy to hold on to.  It is lined with what looks like vinyl glued to the inside which is pretty typical of Bible in this price range.  The Bible has a suggested retail of $49.99 but sells for approximately $39.99 on Christianbook and about $45.00 on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Large-Ultrathin-Reference-Genuine-Cowhide/dp/1433615037/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408390491&sr=8-1&keywords=9781433615030

The Bible measures about nine inches by six inches by an inch.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 008

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 006

The spine of the Bible has raised hubs on the back that appear to just be decorative.  Just because there are hubs doesn’t mean it is a sewn binding.  I do like the look and feel of it.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 011

There is one brown ribbon marker and the page edges are gold colored as well as the spine.  I don’t know if it is real gold leaf or not.  For the price I’m guessing it isn’t.

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 028

Holman NKJV Thinline reference calfskin brown 038

The font is 8 point.  It is clearly printed and easy to read.  The words of Christ are in red.  The Bible is printed in Korea.

There is a sixty six page concordance and eight color maps. The paper that the maps are on aren’t as glossy as some and might hold up better because of it.

Review of the Holman NKJV Large Print Compact Reference Bible

I received a copy of the Holman NKJV Large Print Compact Reference Bible in black bonded leather promptly after requesting it.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 002

The bonded leather is quite stiff.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 020

That is to be expected on a small Bible like this.  The Bible did not come in a box, but rather a card-paper sleeve.  The spine is gilded as well are the page edges.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 004

The cover is about six inches long, and four inches wide.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 006

It looks to be an inch thick.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 005

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 013

The older version of this that I have in the KJV was smyth-sewn, had decorative head and foot bands.  These are conspicuously missing in this newer iteration.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 010

Being made in China could account for the lower production quality.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 014

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 003

That isn’t to say that this isn’t a good value.  It appears that the binding is glued.  The Bible doesn’t as yet lay flat.  It might once it is broken in.  The inside is lined with black card-paper.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 008

This also makes the cover a bit more stiff.  This Bible has 8 point font for the text which makes it very easy on the eyes for such a compact and small Bible.

It is very easy to hold and read.  For those of you who think the 8 pt font is too small, what are you doing getting a compact Bible anyways?  As with most compact Bibles the font is always going to border on the ridiculously small.  Again, at 8 pt. this is a great little Bible.  The paper is thick enough to endure use and not so transparent as to ghost horribly.

Bible Review NKJV Compact Large Print Holman 027

The text is printed clearly and sharply.  The print quality is pretty good for an inexpensive, “take anywhere Bible.”  This little Bible has a concise concordance and eight maps in the back.

This Bible does have a lifetime warranty.  Contrary to some descriptions this Bible does not include a reading plan.  I would recommend this Bible for anyone looking for an easy to transport and read Bible.

  1. How approachable/welcoming, is the Pastor before and/or after the service? The Pastor was friendly and spoke to me after the service.  I did get the feeling he had somewhere to be though.
  2. How friendly is the congregation? The congregation was very friendly. They made sure to talk with me for a moment.
  3. How many congregants were there? There were approximately 10 to 20, the congregation was mostly relatives of the Pastor, and the Sunday School teacher.
  4. How do they take the offering? Offering plates.
  5. Where are they located? They are at 1212 1st Ave. South, Payette, Idaho 83661. Their phone number is 208-642-3940.
  6. How is the service broke down between, prayers, worship, and sermon? Approximately 10% Prayer, 15% hymns, 5% Fellowship, 70% Sermon.
  7. What is the condition of their facilities? The facilities were in fair condition for their age. They are in a building that used to be a Roman Catholic Church.  It has been de-Romanized.
  8. What is the preaching style of their Pastor? The sermon was topical. The Pastor jumped around quite a bit, sighting many different passages.  It seemed that the message got lost in the process.  I personally prefer expository preaching.
  9. Do they use a specific translation of the Bible, or prohibit any translations, if so why? They use the KJV.  Here is a quote from their site, “We’re fundamental, we hold to the King James Bible as the inspired, preserved Word of God for the English speaking people.”  Here is another, “The King James Version of the Bible shall be the official and only translation used by the church (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21).”
  10. Do they have a web page? They do, and here is the link; http://www.lbcpayette.com/6052.html If so, is there a clear, orthodox, confession or statement of faith? Here is the link; http://www.lbcpayette.com/11701.html  From what I can tell they are orthodox.  Their soteriology is sound.  They believe in, total depravity, election and predestination, perseverance of the saints, cessationism, and dispensationalism.

  1. How approachable/welcoming, is the Pastor before and/or after the service? The Pastor was friendly and spoke to us after the service.
  2. How friendly is the congregation? The congregation was very friendly.  They made sure to talk with us for a moment.
  3. How many congregants were there? There were approximately 50 to 70, the congregation was mostly older folks.
  4. How do they take the offering? Offering plates.
  5. Where are they located? They are at 208 SW 1st Ave. Ontario, Oregon 97914.  Their phone number is (541) 889-5458
  6. How is the service broke down between, prayers, worship, and sermon? It is harder to break this down because the service was mostly liturgical.
  7. What is the condition of their facilities? The facilities were in good condition for their age.  I really appreciated the stained glass windows, the Cross, and the fact that it was evident this is a Christian Church and not a rec. center.
  8. What is the preaching style of their Pastor? The sermon was expository.  It was on John 9:1-41.  The Pastor did a pretty good job of opening up the scripture to the congregation.
  9. Do they use a specific translation of the Bible, or prohibit any translations, if so why? I didn’t notice which one they used.
  10. Do they have a web page? They do, and here is the link; http://pilgrimlutheran.net/  If so, is there a clear, orthodox, confession or statement of faith? There was, but it is pretty simple, they are a Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod.  If you need help with that just look up Lutheran and Missouri Synod.  Some points of interest are that they have a rich faith history.  You can look up Martin Luther the Reformer and the 95 Thesis.  They are Paedobaptists.  They also believe in consubstantiation for the elements of communion.    Overall we had a very nice time of worship with them.

  1. How approachable/welcoming, is the Pastor before and/or after the service? The Pastor greeted us in the Sanctuary and was friendly.
  2. How friendly is the congregation? The congregation was friendly.  Only a couple of people talked with us or greeted us besides the Pastor.
  3. How many congregants were there? There were approximately 80 to 110 in the 11 O’clock service.
  4. How do they take the offering? A bag was passed.
  5. Where are they located? They are next to Schwan’s in Fruitland at, 100 E 1st St Fruitland, ID 83619.  Their phone number is (208) 452-3460

  7. What is the condition of their facilities? The facilities were above average for the size of their congregation.
  8. What is the preaching style of their Pastor? The sermon was topical.  It was about marital love and how to stay in love as opposed to just falling in love and then out of it.  The sermon was pretty good.  Pastor Doug tied the gospel in.  He explained how love is a decision, and an action.  He made a point of calling love a verb.  He spoke of Christ’s sacrificial love and how we should consider others above ourselves.  His scripture passage was Philippians 2:3-8.
  9. Do they use a specific translation of the Bible, or prohibit any translations, if so why? They mostly use the NIV.
  10. Do they have a web page? They do, and here is the link; http://www.westvalleychurchfm.org/  If so, is there a clear, orthodox, confession or statement of faith? They have a beliefs page.  It appears orthodox.  I was hoping for a more detailed confession of faith.  They are Wesleyan/Arminian.  Here is the link from their page; http://www.westvalleychurchfm.org/devotional/

  1. How approachable/welcoming, is the Pastor before and/or after the service? The Pastor was there, but he did not preach, as he was recovering from a surgery, and cold.  It should be noted, that a congregation that size makes it difficult to have a Pastor greet everyone who comes in.  They did have assigned, volunteers, greeting people as they walked into the sanctuary.
  2. How friendly is the congregation? The congregation was friendly, and welcoming.  I was already acquainted with several of the congregants who I work with.
  3. How many congregants are there? There were approximately between 200 to 300 people there.  They have two morning services, one at 9:00 a.m. and the other at 11:00 a.m.
  4. How do they take the offering? They didn’t take an offering that I noticed and I didn’t see where they had an offering box.  I will try to find out how they do it.
  5. Where are they located? They are at 1775 Alameda Dr, Ontario, OR 97914.  If you turn left just before Albertson’s, then go all the way down to the end of the street, it is on the corner to your right.  Here is their phone number, (541) 889-2260
  6. How is the service broke down between, prayers, worship, and sermon? It seemed to be approximately 10% announcements, 15% prayer, 30% worship, and 45% sermon.  The worship songs were all contemporary.
  7. What is the condition of their facilities? The facilities were above average.  The main parking lot is not paved.  They do have handicap parking up close to the sidewalks.                                                                                                                   cchapel
  8. What is the preaching style of their Pastor? The sermon was an exegesis of Haggai 1, and part of 2.  It seemed expository. As I said earlier, they had a guest Pastor preach the sermon.  If he is any indicator of the type of preaching their Pastor delivers, then I would say they do pretty well.  We will have to visit again on a Sunday when he is preaching.
  9. Do they use a specific translation of the Bible, or prohibit any translations, if so why? Their web page indicates that they use many different translations. Everyone brings their own.
  10. Do they have a web page? Yes, here is the link, www.ccontario.com   If so, is there a clear, orthodox, confession or statement of faith? Here is the link to their statement of faith page, www.ccontario.com/sof/index.php  I didn’t see anything that would make me think they were not orthodox.  I did notice that it seems they are Charismatic and Continuationists.

We visited a Charismatic/Pentecostal/Messianic/Sabbath Keeping/Egalitarian/House church on 03/08/14

  1. How approachable/welcoming, is the Pastor before and/or after the service? The Pastor was out of town.  His wife led the service, and a young woman gave the sermon.
  2. How friendly is the congregation? The congregation was friendly, and welcoming.
  3. How many congregants are there? There were approximately between 10-20 people there.
  4. How do they take the offering? A bag was passed.
  5. Where are they located? In Payette, Idaho at someone’s home.
  6. How is the service broke down between, prayers, worship, and sermon? It was a big mess.  It was mostly, from what I could tell, all speaking in tongues, impromtu dancing, someone was doing flag spinning, another lady was doing some sort of tai chi looking dance with her eyes closed, a Jewish prayer shawl got whipped out, a lot of singing.
  7. What is the condition of their facilities? It was in someone’s home.
  8. What is the preaching style of their Pastor? The sermon was delivered by a young woman, who is a friend of ours.  I am hesitant here.  I don’t want to hurt her feelings, but she is inexperienced, and unqualified to be a Pastor.  There was one Bible verse used for the entire service.  It was misapplied, and out of context.
  9. Do they use a specific translation of the Bible, or prohibit any translations, if so why? They didn’t seem to prohibit any translations or promote any.  Frankly, I didn’t see that many Bibles there at all.
  10. Do they have a web page? No web page.  If so, is there a clear, orthodox, confession or statement of faith? No.  I’m pretty sure there isn’t even a doctrinal consensus among the people that were there.

A note about Sabbath keepers, and the Messianic people all over the place, they need to stop and read Colossians 2:1-23!  1For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face,2that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself,3in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.4I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument.5For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ.

6Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,7having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.9For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,10and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;11and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;12having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.15When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.

16Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day—17things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.18Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind,19and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth which is from God.

20If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as,21“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”22(which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men?23These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

”Every moment, of every day, as a Christian, you are resting in the perfect work of Christ on the cross.  You are experiencing the Sabbath rest every moment of your Christian life.  Jesus fulfills all righteousness on our behalf.  The early Church met and worshipped on Sundays.  We can see this by reading the works of the early Church fathers as well as Acts.

In regards to egalitarianism; 1 Timothy 2:9-15 9Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,10but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.11A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.12But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.13For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.15But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.”

1 Timothy 3:1-15 1It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.2An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,3not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.4He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),6and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.7And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain,9but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.10These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach.11Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.12Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.13For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long;15but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.”

Titus 1:5-16  “5For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,6namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion.7For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,8but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,9holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

10For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,11who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”13This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,14not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.15To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.16They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.”

For the Pentecostals, Matthew 16:4 4“An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.

Repent, read your Bibles, pray, and worship God in obedience to His word.  Why are you seeking experiences instead of the Lord?  It seems like your faith revolves around the gifts that you allegedly have and your experiences with them rather than the word of God and His sovereign will.  1 Corinthians 8-13 8Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.9For we know in part and we prophesy in part;10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.12For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.13But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Take these words as loving correction.  If you are at this group or part of it you need to leave and come under the authority of a Pastor from an orthodox denomination.  This kind of errancy happens when you are not held accountable.

We visited Christian Life Fellowship or CLF 03/09/14.

  1. How approachable/welcoming, is the Pastor before and/or after the service? The Pastor was not at the front door greeting people nor was he after the service.
  2. How friendly is the congregation? The congregation was very friendly and welcoming.
  3. How many congregants are there? There were approximately between 100-125 people there.
  4. How do they take the offering? A bag was passed.
  5. Where are they located? They are located at 366 S.E. 5th St. Ontario, OR 97914, their phone number is (541)-889-7264
  6. How is the service broke down between, prayers, worship, and sermon?  It seemed to be approximately 5% prayer, 60% worship, and 35% sermon.
  7. What is the condition of their facilities? The facilities were above average, there was no cross to be found in the sanctuary.  The only cross I saw, was a small decorative one in the foyer.  It was only about a foot long and hung on the wall as decoration.
  8. What is the preaching style of their Pastor? Horribly eisegetical, misapplied scripture… what he used of it.  They are part of the Vineyard Movement, and John Wimber’s bad instruction.
  9. Do they use a specific translation of the Bible, or prohibit any translations, if so why? They didn’t seem to prohibit any translations or promote any.
  10. Do they have a web page? Yes, here is the link; http://www.clfontario.org/#/home  If so, is there a clear, orthodox, confession or statement of faith? Here is the link to their,      “What We Believe” page. http://www.clfontario.org/#/home/what-we-believe It was not as theologically clear and certain as I would like.  They have a confused understanding of satan. They seem to see satan as almost an adversarial contender to God instead of one of His creations.  It looks like they believe, “Replacement Theology.”  They are also in need of some help on their pneumatology.  Looking at the end of their belief statement it appears they got it from the vineyard movement  associated with John Wimber.  They are Christian, just too reliant on experience, and in dire need of Bible study.  After they would say, “amen” in the service the entire congregation would give one loud clap.  We felt like we were in the middle of a cult meeting.

Then the Pastor started talking about how when he was talking to Jesus.  At 20 minutes and 35 seconds into his sermon he said, “I literally had the Lord say something to me, he says, well Doug I want to introduce you to the Holy Spirit.”  Then at about 20:53 he says, “and so what happened was I literally this very Jewish looking person that’s in my mind as I’m connecting with Jesus when he says I want to introduce you to the Holy Spirit, here’s this kind a blonde haired surfer dude, “hey!” he’s just chillin’, just hangin'”  then at 21:29 he says, “the person of the Holy Spirit he morphed in the coolest kind a sci-fi way I have ever seen, he morphed into like oil “hooo” and he would just smooth things out”

That was on top of God apparently literally telling him things.  I’m not sure if I was pickin’ up what he was putin’ down if ya dig?  I know he was well intentioned, but I’m wondering if maybe there is a better way?  I’m not even going to get into the red velvet lined closet that Jesus treasures our pain in…
