Children of Satan Have Always Been Trying to Kill the Light.

So ask yourself, “Who is their father?”  Who would want to murder so direly?

(John 8:37 NASB) “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.

(John 8:38 NASB) “I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.”

(John 8:39 NASB) They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus *said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham.

(John 8:40 NASB) “But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.

(John 8:41 NASB) “You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God.”

(John 8:42 NASB) Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.

They weren’t quite getting it yet.  Jesus was telling them they are Satan’s children, but they still saw themselves as God’s children.

(John 8:43 NASB) “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word.

(John 8:44 NASB) “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

(John 8:45 NASB) “But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.

(John 8:46 NASB) “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?

(John 8:47 NASB) “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

(John 8:48 NASB) The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

(John 8:49 NASB) Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.

(John 8:50 NASB) “But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges.

(John 8:51 NASB) “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.”

(John 8:52 NASB) The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.’

He is about to lay it all out for them here, and then they get really mad…

(John 8:53 NASB) “Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?”

(John 8:54 NASB) Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’;

(John 8:55 NASB) and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word.

(John 8:56 NASB) “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”

(John 8:57 NASB) So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

Here is the Coup de grâce.  I love the ἐγώ εἰμί statements Jesus makes.  That my friends is why they want him dead.

(John 8:58 NASB) Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

(John 8:59 NASB) Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

Sinners in the hands of an angry god.

“8.     Natural men’s prudence and care to preserve their own lives, or the care of others to preserve them, do not secure them a moment. To this, divine providence and universal experience do also bear testimony. There is this clear evidence that men’s own wisdom is no security to them from death; that if it were otherwise we should see some difference between the wise and politic men of the world, and others, with regard to their liableness to early and unexpected death: but how is it in fact? Eccles. 2:16. “How dieth the wise man? even as the fool.“”  Jonathan Edwards

We all die when it is God’s will for us to die.  No contrivance of wisdom or artifice of intellect will stay His hand.

Justification, 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith.

From the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith

CHAPTER 11

OF JUSTIFICATION

Paragraph 1. Those whom God effectually calls, he also freely justifies,1 not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous;2 not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ’s sake alone;3 not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing Christ’s active obedience unto the whole law, and passive obedience in his death for their whole and sole righteousness by faith,4 which faith they have not of themselves; it is the gift of God.5
1 Rom. 3:24, 8:30
2 Rom. 4:5-8, Eph. 1:7
3 1 Cor. 1:30,31, Rom. 5:17-19
4 Phil. 3:8,9; Eph. 2:8-10
5 John 1:12, Rom. 5:17

Paragraph 2. Faith thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification;6 yet is not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is no dead faith, but works by love.7
6 Rom. 3:28
7 Gal.5:6, James 2:17,22,26

Paragraph 3. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those who are justified; and did, by the sacrifice of himself in the blood of his cross, undergoing in their stead the penalty due to them, make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to God’s justice in their behalf;8 yet, in as much as he was given by the Father for them, and his obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead, and both freely, not for anything in them,9 their justification is only of free grace, that both the exact justice and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners.10
8 Heb. 10:14; 1 Pet. 1:18,19; Isa. 53:5,6
9 Rom. 8:32; 2 Cor. 5:21
10 Rom. 3:26; Eph. 1:6,7, 2:7

Paragraph 4. God did from all eternity decree to justify all the elect,11 and Christ did in the fullness of time die for their sins, and rise again for their justification;12 nevertheless, they are not justified personally, until the Holy Spirit in time does actually apply Christ to them.13
11 Gal. 3:8, 1 Pet. 1:2, 1 Tim. 2:6
12 Rom. 4:25
13 Col. 1:21,22, Titus 3:4-7

Paragraph 5. God continues to forgive the sins of those that are justified,14 and although they can never fall from the state of justification,15 yet they may, by their sins, fall under God’s fatherly displeasure;16 and in that condition they usually do not have the light of his countenance restored to them, until  they humble themselves, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance.17
14 Matt. 6:12, 1 John 1:7,9
15 John 10:28
16 Ps. 89:31-33
17 Ps. 32:5, Ps. 51, Matt. 26:75

Paragraph 6. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament.18
18 Gal. 3:9; Rom. 4:22-24

Christian worldview analysis of Alfred Hitchcock “Rope” (1948)

SLIMJIM's avatarThe Domain for Truth

Rope001

Introduction

As an example of evaluating a film with consideration of its worldview I will be looking at Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope (1948).  This movie reminded me the lesson that bad ideas can make people into monsters.  In what follows we will look at a summary of the story of the film, make the point that this movie is about philosophy, cover the philosophy that drives the villains follow by a discussion of the dilemma that such a philosophy poses for the characters and the audience before a quick summary of what we can learn.  Readers must also be warned that there that this essay will have many spoilers.

The Story

In an essay by Helen Cox and David Neumeyer, this is how they summarized the movie:

Brandon and Philip share a New York apartment. They have distorted the rather Nietszchean ideas of their former headmaster Rupert and decide to strangle…

What about those shepherds?

Adoration_of_the_shepherds_1663_Abraham_Hondius

OK friends so check this out.  Abel was a shepherd.  Abraham was a shepherd and led the people out according to the promise of God.  Moses was a shepherd in Midian and led the people out of bondage according to God’s will.  They rebelled and he led them around the wilderness.  David was a shepherd boy who became a King and led the people.  God sent an angel to reveal to shepherds where the Christ was born.  The shepherds led us to the Baby Jesus in the manger.  Jesus is our shepherd who leads us out of bondage to sin according to God’s will.  Cool…

Ever Wonder?

Feeling nostalgic today.

Bob Snyder's avatarSnyder's Soapbox

Ever wonder why postmodernism has spread so quickly?  Well wonder no more.  It has been taught by the public school system for the last 20 years.  That’s right, your lovely tax payer funded school system teaches postmodernism.  To sum up what postmodernism is I’ll just say that it rejects the notion of objective truth in favor of a personal perception of what is true for each individual.  How ludicrous is that?  I mean… Really?  Here is an example, “Kid’s playing a game and nobody looses because they are all winners.”  More importantly God becomes whatever the individual decides.  This is called idolatry.  When you fashion a god that is more to your liking, when you don’t accept the reality of the sovereign God of the Bible it is called idolatry!  So they teach the kids in a circuitous manner all about subjective truth and this my friends finds it’s way…

Update on the Cambridge Concord and Transetto Shipping Damage.

I was contacted by an employee of Cambridge Press. (I didn’t get permission to use their name or quote them so I’ll use general references.)  They told me they would be looking into how the two Bibles came to be packed improperly and incurred damage during shipping due to the improper packaging.  I promptly received an e-mail back from my contact at Cambridge Press.  They concluded during their investigation that it was indeed a training issue and have resolved the problem.  I commend them on their efforts to maintain high standards.  You can read about the damage here.
