The New Oxford Annotated Bible With The Apocrypha, Expanded Edition, in Revised Standard Version, (RSV) Covered in Genuine Black Leather. 8914A

DSCN6374

Today on Snyder’s Soapbox we are going to take a look at a Bible for all the RSV and Apocrypha fans.  The Apocrypha isn’t my cup of tea, but I recognize there are some folks out there who would like to buy a well built Bible in this translation with the Apocrypha.  This Bible from Oxford, is very well built.  I wouldn’t look at it as a premium Bible, but more as a work horse.  The thing is built like a tank.  That’s not to say it isn’t an attractive looking Bible, it is.  I would categorize this Bible as a daily use Study Bible.  If you want to read the Apocrypha, and the notes that go along with this edition, this is probably the best option.  I’ll stick to my own flavor of commentaries.  As a Reformed Baptist much of the notes in this edition are generalized for broader appeal.

It is covered in black genuine leather with a moderate grain and a perimeter groove.  The leather is harder, and high gloss, leading me to think that it is pig skin leather.  Pig skin leather holds up well, but is not as supple as other choices.  It is also less expensive to use.  It is case bound, and has a gold colored, hot-stamped, perimeter line around the inside cover.  It has two yellow/gold ribbon markers, black and gold bands.  The spine has the words, “The New Oxford Annotated Bible” at the top, “With the Apocrypha Expanded Edition” under that, then, “Revised Standard Version” and, “Oxford” at the bottom.  The page edges are also hot stamped with gold colored foil.

I really like the ribbons.  Their color and material, are nice for a Bible with this low price.

DSCN6383

The spine is smyth sewn, flexible, and durable.  I can’t think of any reason why this Bible wouldn’t hold up for a long time.  The paper is thick, opaque, and the 10 pt. font of the main text, is sharp and clear.  The notes are in 8 pt. font.  This Bible is printed, and bound in South Korea.  It is a quality edition at a good value price.

It is laid out in a double column, paragraph format, with notes at the bottom.  Each book has an introduction.  It seems to be more of a study Bible, than a reference Bible, with all the helps that are in it.  At the end of the day, if you are in the market for an RSV, with the Apocrypha, this is the only choice.  It is well built, and priced to sell.  It should last a long time, and serve you well.  Make sure to check out all of the pictures I took of this edition for a better look at the features on my flickr page.

Oxford NKJV Scofield Study Bible, Reader’s Edition, Genuine leather, Black Thumb-Indexed

I received the Oxford University Press New King James Version Scofield Study Bible III in the mail gratis from Oxford, for the purpose of review.  It was shipped in a cardboard box with paper packing.

DSCN5043

It arrived safe and sound, with no damage.  Inside the shipping box, was the retail box.  It is a two piece box, with a clear plastic window in it.  It is sturdy enough to retain for storing the Bible in.

DSCN5050

Inside the retail box, the Bible is wrapped in plastic wrap.  This Bible is black in color, and is listed as genuine leather.  It feels like pigskin leather.  It is hard and shiny like pigskin leather.  This one had an odd impression across the front cover. It has been being used for a couple months now and the impression is still there. If I had purchased this Bible I would have sent it back for an exchange, even though it does not affect the function.

Upon opening it, I was struck with a strong odor.  It smelled strongly, and not in a pleasant way.  I have had it opened for a few days now, and the smell has dissipated quite a bit.  There is a groove around the perimeter, and on the inside there is a gilt line.

This Bible has a decorative head and tail band.  It also has a gold/yellow colored ribbon marker.  The spine and corners of this Bible are rounded.

DSCN5085

The thumb indexes are pretty typical of other thumb indexes.  Some people love them, I don’t really use them.  This Bible is printed and bound in Korea.  They seem to be the new middle of the pack printers as far as quality and price go.  Most of the Korean made Bibles are a good value.  They aren’t as well made as the Jongbloed Bibles, and they aren’t near as expensive either. They far exceed the quality of the Chinese made Bibles and are generally about a third to twice the cost.  In my opinion, it is worth it to spend the extra money.  The Chinese quality is so hit or miss, it is ridiculous.

DSCN5078

DSCN5067

This Bible seems to be pretty well made.  The binding is sewn and overcast stitching is employed to further strengthen the binding. This is a very desirable feature. The leather is decent grade pigskin genuine leather.

DSCN5064

DSCN5054

I am pretty pleased with all of the features this Bible has for the price.  It seems to be a good value.  The presentation and family records pages are attractive compared to most.  They are printed on a textured, colored paper.  They look fancy compared to the plain paper ones, and they take ink better than the glossy paper in others.

DSCN5060

There are a lot of articles, cross references, chain references, maps, footnotes, and other helps dispersed throughout this Bible.  Book introductions at the beginning of each book are just enough information without being information overload.

DSCN5077

DSCN5086

The Bible is a bit thicker than some study Bibles, but not near as large as others, like the ESV Study Bible.  I think they made a decent compromise between features and size.  Sometimes it seems there is never enough in a study Bible to please some customers, and if there were, it would be so large they couldn’t carry it.  A good editor is a must.

DSCN5052

The paper is opaque enough so that ghosting is minimal.  The 9 point font is inked uniformly and printed clearly, to contrast well with the paper.  The layout is double column, verse format, with side column references in the gutter and margin, notes are at the bottom of the page.  The text that is in red is also printed uniform, and clean.  The verse numbers are in black regardless of whether or not they precede black text or red.  The page edges are gold gilt.   There is a large, useful concordance, and 12 color maps in the end of this Bible.

The Holman NKJV Study Bible in Black Genuine Leather, Revisited.

The Holman NKJV Study Bible in Black Genuine Leather, Revisited.

DSCN3927

About a year ago I did a review of the Holman NKJV Study Bible. Overall the review was favorable. I thought it might be nice to give it a second look and see what my impressions are now. In my initial review I said that it had a glued binding, but I have found that it is actually sewn.

DSCN3992

The spine is not rounded and was kind of difficult to see down in the gutter. After some breaking in and a bit more force, you can see the thread. The signatures are not very big either so it was more difficult to tell.

DSCN3936

It is a good thing for a Bible this big to have thinner signatures. It makes it more flexible and less prone to falling apart. You see if it does start to fall apart only a few pages will come loose in a smaller signature instead of many pages in a larger signature.

I also commented on the size of this bad boy. That part has not changed. It is still pretty humongous. I would put it up there with the ESV study Bible for size. It is an attractive looking Bible as far as mass produced Bibles go. It is covered in black genuine leather.

DSCN3934

It is not shiny like so many of them are. It is has silver stamped lettering on the spine and silver gilt page edges.

DSCN3935

DSCN3938

It is still printed and bound in the good ol’ U.S.A.

DSCN3949

It is very well printed. The text is clear and bold. It is very black and contrasts against the bright white paper.

DSCN3975

The paper could be a bit thicker, but then this Bible would be even bigger… That would be a problem. This is a red letter edition. The font is approximately a 9 pt. font being a good compromise.

DSCN3982

There are two ribbon markers one is black and the other is red.

DSCN3978

The Bible is case bound and well done.

DSCN3940

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this Bible for anyone looking for a study Bible. Here is a list of the helps/features;

Holman Bible Publishers is excited to present the Holman Study Bible: NKJV Edition, a new edition modeled after its own 2011 ECPA Christian Book Award-winning HCSB Study Bible, where every well-conceived study help is practically placed on the same page spread as the related biblical text. It also features 15,000 study notes, 141 photos, 62 timelines, 59 maps, 40-page concordance, 20 articles and essays on practical and theological issues, 16 illustrations and reconstructions, and 15 charts.

Other details of the Holman Study Bible: NKJV Edition include a two-column text setting, center-column cross references, the words of Christ in red type, extensive book introductions, one- and three-year Bible reading plans, a notes section, four-color presentation page and family records section, and two-piece die-cut gift box.

All study features throughout the Holman Study Bible: NKJV Edition are designed to put the emphasis where it must be – on making the Scriptures, God’s written Word, clear and understandable.

It is extremely flexible.

DSCN3997

The features are too numerous to expound on all of them. A very well done study Bible at an extremely affordable price from the United States, I hope other publishers are paying attention. You don’t have to make horrible quality Bibles in China to make a profit.
